TTT: Movie/TV Adaptations

This was last week’s topic, but I missed it, and I’m sorry I missed it, because I really wanted to do this one! Who knew the end of the year would come with it a deluge of assessments, portfolios, and presentations? I’ve also been reading too much fanfiction and not enough books to review, so that might also have contributed to the lack of blogging this past week. Anyway, here’s a backtrack to the missing week of blogging (and I swear I’ll come through with a review of Novik’s Uprooted, because I’m almost done with it and OMG SO GOOD).

Top Ten Books I’d Love To See As Movies/TV Shows

Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson – I’m always going to want anything Mistborn to be turned into the TV medium. This would probably make HBO’s Game of Thrones budget pale in comparison; I mean, can you imagine all of the CGing that would have to be done if this were to come up as a live-action fantasy show? If nothing else, I’d settle for a well-done animated series. OMG that would be awesome, too.

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo – There’s something nicely visual about the powers in Bardugo’s Grisha trilogy. I haven’t read the continuing two books yet, but from Shadow and Bone alone, the visualizations were fantastic. I want to see the darkness, I want to see Alina’s powers come to light (geddit?! XD), I want to be able to see the Darkling clap his hands and the BOOMing darkness (because I swear I could hear his power just as much as I can see it in the book). That said, I totally see this more as an anime than anything else.

Cinder by Marissa Meyer – There is not enough YA science fiction on TV. Well, I guess if you count dystopias, then there are quite a bit. But East-meets-West in space fairy tale retelling? Come on. I’m just waiting for this to happen. Can it happen, please? I’d settle for a movie or two, too, but a sci-fi TV series would be AWESOME.

Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman – Right. There was technically a mini-series based on this book, but I’m discounting it, because I want Neverwhere redone with the modern tech we have now. I loved this book, hands down. And it’d be nice if Gaiman also worked closely with the screenwriters on this. Wishful thinking, I guess.

World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War by Max Brooks – Also another book that was a “loose” inspiration on a movie that had almost nothing to do with the book itself. I thought the concept of the book was great, and it would have been cool to have seen the movie in small vignettes like what Brooks did in the books. It could have been like what was done with District 9, turned it into a documentary-style film. That would have been awesome.

The Shambling Guide to New York City by Mur Lafferty – Admittedly, I wasn’t blown away by this book. Still, I do have to admit that I would totally watch the shmat out of this story if it ever went to TV. I mean, there’d have to be a different spin, because I can see this becoming one of those procedurals, where the main character deals with different NYC-underground problems that involve a cast of creepy and non-creepy demon-creatures. Also, I wouldn’t mind seeing the abs on a hungry incubus. Just saying.

Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas – SOMEBODY NEEDS TO DO THIS. Actually, I got reminded of putting this into a list after showing Pixar’s Brave to my rambunctious three-year-old students. They enjoyed Merida (and by they I mean both girls and boys), and I’d love to see another badass fantasy female grace the silver screen, though in a non-Disney-esque manner. If the filmmakers can make Katniss Everdeen endearing (and honestly, I kind of disliked her by Mockingjay), then goodness knows what they can do with Celaena, who is all types of awesome.

Fables by Bill Willingham – Yeah, yeah, Once Upon a Time and Grimm happened. I don’t care. Fables should have been a TV show ages ago. I suppose I can settle for a video game, but still.

Night Watch by Terry Pratchett – I loved the Going Postal mini-series that came out years back, and would love it if they did another Discworld special quite like it. Seeing Sam Vimes come to life would be phenomenal. But really, I’d love anything to do with Night Watch, it’s my favorite book of the series.

Leviathan trilogy by Scott Westerfeld – FABRICATED WHALE AIRSHIPS. STEAMPUNK. GLOBAL TRAVEL. HISTORIC TIME PERIOD. HIDDEN PRINCES. CROSSDRESSING HEROINES. Okay, okay, I need to calm down. I love this trilogy to pieces, though, and what is not to love about seeing anything steampunk on TV? I say TV because I’m pretty sure putting this series into movies would do a gross injustice to the story. And because TV show means more steampunk visuals. Yes.
