I’ve since given up lamenting over how exponential the growth of my Goodreads TBR is. I just accept it now, and move on. And continue to add to it. Eventually it’s going to lessen…eventually. In my defense, I’ve been doing much better with adding books. I’m a little pickier now, if you can believe it. Not that it’s stopped me from adding a gazillion books onto the TBR anyway…
Top Ten Books I’ve Recently Added To My TBR
Dreamer’s Pool by Juliet Marillier
In exchange for help escaping her long and wrongful imprisonment, embittered magical healer Blackthorn has vowed to set aside her bid for vengeance against the man who destroyed all that she once held dear. Followed by a former prison mate, a silent hulk of a man named Grim, she travels north to Dalriada. There she’ll live on the fringe of a mysterious forest, duty bound for seven years to assist anyone who asks for her help. Oran, crown prince of Dalriada, has waited anxiously for the arrival of his future bride, Lady Flidais. He knows her only from a portrait and sweetly poetic correspondence that have convinced him Flidais is his destined true love. But Oran discovers letters can lie. For although his intended exactly resembles her portrait, her brutality upon arrival proves she is nothing like the sensitive woman of the letters.
With the strategic marriage imminent, Oran sees no way out of his dilemma. Word has spread that Blackthorn possesses a remarkable gift for solving knotty problems, so the prince asks her for help. To save Oran from his treacherous nuptials, Blackthorn and Grim will need all their resources: courage, ingenuity, leaps of deduction, and more than a little magic.
I think my body is ready for another Marillier book. Hopefully this one won’t make me cry like all her other damn books have done.
Fat chance of that, but one can hope.
Flirting with Danger by Suzanne Enoch
Samantha Jellicoe is a thief and proud of it. Raised to appreciate the finer things in life, Sam has no trouble divesting the wealthy of their treasures. This all changed, however, the night she attempts to steal a valuable item from a Palm Beach estate. Before she knew what hit her, a bomb goes off, a guard is killed, and Sam ends up saving millionaire Richard Addison. She’s a good thief and will own up to her jobs, but if anyone thinks to tie her to murder, they better think again.
On any other night, having a one hundred plus pounds of female fling herself at you is a good thing. But on this particular night, Richard Addison is mad as hell. Not only did he just have his gallery blown up-with him about to enter it-but the woman who rescued him didn’t stick around to offer any explanations. When the dust settles, Rick knows the only person with answers to his questions is the mystery woman. And if she thinks she can hide from him, she better think again.
I wanted something light-hearted and chick flicky. I saw this in a Top Ten list from one of my fellow blog readers and figured “hey, I like this cover! And the premise! Let’s put it in!” Yeah. This is how I sometimes decide my TBR.
The Jane Austen Handbook by Margaret Sullivan
For all those readers who dream about living in Regency England, The Jane Austen Handbook offers step-by-step instructions for proper comportment in the early nineteenth century. You’ll discover:
- How to Become an Accomplished Lady
- How to Run a Great House
- How to Indicate Interest in a Gentleman Without Seeming Forward
- How to Throw a Dinner Party
- How to Choose and Buy Clothing
Full of practical directions for navigating the travails of Regency life, this charming illustrated book also serves as a companion for present-day readers, explaining the English class system, currency, dress, and the nuances of graceful living.
I saw a mention of this handbook in my Jane Austen: Cover to Cover book. Naturally, I added it to my list.
Skyborn by David Dalglish
The last remnants of humanity live on six islands floating high above the Endless Ocean, fighting a brutal civil war in the skies. The Seraphim, elite soldiers trained for aerial combat, battle one another while wielding elements of ice, fire and lightning.
The lives of their parents claimed in combat, twins Kael and Breanna Skyborn enter the Seraphim Academy to follow in their footsteps. There they will learn to harness the elements as weapons and fight at break-neck speeds while soaring high above the waters. But they must learn quickly, for a nearby island has set its hungry eyes upon their home. When the invasion comes, the twins must don their wings and ready their blades to save those they love from annihilation.
I don’t often read angel-related books. I don’t think I ever truly got into them when the hype came around. All the same, I did adore Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor and the book jacket summary sounds interesting enough. I’ll totally read this.
A Crown for Cold Silver by Alex Marshall
Twenty years ago, feared general Cobalt Zosia led her five villainous captains and mercenary army into battle, wrestling monsters and toppling an empire. When there were no more titles to win and no more worlds to conquer, she retired and gave up her legend to history.
Now the peace she carved for herself has been shattered by the unprovoked slaughter of her village. Seeking bloody vengeance, Zosia heads for battle once more, but to find justice she must confront grudge-bearing enemies, once-loyal allies, and an unknown army that marches under a familiar banner.
Feared female ex-general out for vengeance? YESPLS. Omg YES PLS. ‘Nuff said.
Heartless by Marissa Meyer
Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the yet-unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend and supply the Kingdom of Hearts with delectable pastries and confections. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next Queen.
At a royal ball where Cath is expected to receive the king’s marriage proposal, she meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the King and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship.
Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.
Um. I’m not sure which one I squeed more for. The fact that the author of Cinder is writing a new story outside her Lunar Chronicles series or the fact that she’s doing a retelling of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. About the Queen of Hearts. Just. WHATISTHISIWANTITNOW.
Firefight by Brandon Sanderson
They told David it was impossible–that even the Reckoners had never killed a High Epic. Yet, Steelheart–invincible, immortal, unconquerable–is dead. And he died by David’s hand.
Eliminating Steelheart was supposed to make life more simple. Instead, it only made David realize he has questions. Big ones. And there’s no one in Newcago who can give him the answers he needs.
Babylon Restored, the old borough of Manhattan, has possibilities, though. Ruled by the mysterious High Epic, Regalia, David is sure Babylon Restored will lead him to what he needs to find. And while entering another city oppressed by a High Epic despot is a gamble, David’s willing to risk it. Because killing Steelheart left a hole in David’s heart. A hole where his thirst for vengeance once lived. Somehow, he filled that hole with another Epic–Firefight. And he’s willing to go on a quest darker, and more dangerous even, than the fight against Steelheart to find her, and to get his answers.
Yeah. I need this in my life this year. Seriously, though. On my priority list.
The Mystery of the Clockwork Sparrow by Katherine Woodfine

TREMBLE as the most DASTARDLY criminals in London enact their wicked plans! This reminds me of Paradise, a show I’ve been watching on Netflix on a sporadic basis. Well, with the steampunk and mystery added, of course. This might prove to be my kind of tongue-in-cheek steampunk mystery, if anything else.
Vicious by V.E. Schwab
Victor and Eli started out as college roommates—brilliant, arrogant, lonely boys who recognized the same sharpness and ambition in each other. In their senior year, a shared research interest in adrenaline, near-death experiences, and seemingly supernatural events reveals an intriguing possibility: that under the right conditions, someone could develop extraordinary abilities. But when their thesis moves from the academic to the experimental, things go horribly wrong. Ten years later, Victor breaks out of prison, determined to catch up to his old friend (now foe), aided by a young girl whose reserved nature obscures a stunning ability. Meanwhile, Eli is on a mission to eradicate every other super-powered person that he can find—aside from his sidekick, an enigmatic woman with an unbreakable will. Armed with terrible power on both sides, driven by the memory of betrayal and loss, the archnemeses have set a course for revenge—but who will be left alive at the end?
Lots of praise for this book. Regardless of hype, I loved the first Schwab book I picked up, and I also want to read this one.
The Ghost Bride by Yangsze Choo
Though ruled by British overlords, the Chinese of colonial Malaya still cling to ancient customs. And in the sleepy port town of Malacca, ghosts and superstitions abound.
Li Lan, the daughter of a genteel but bankrupt family, has few prospects. But fate intervenes when she receives an unusual proposal from the wealthy and powerful Lim family. They want her to become a ghost bride for the family’s only son, who recently died under mysterious circumstances. Rarely practiced, a traditional ghost marriage is used to placate a restless spirit. Such a union would guarantee Li Lan a home for the rest of her days, but at a terrible price.
After an ominous visit to the opulent Lim mansion, Li Lan finds herself haunted not only by her ghostly would-be suitor, but also by her desire for the Lim’s handsome new heir, Tian Bai. Night after night, she is drawn into the shadowy parallel world of the Chinese afterlife, with its ghost cities, paper funeral offerings, vengeful spirits and monstrous bureaucracy—including the mysterious Er Lang, a charming but unpredictable guardian spirit. Li Lan must uncover the Lim family’s darkest secrets—and the truth about her own family—before she is trapped in this ghostly world forever.
This just sounded SO GOOD. And that cover is beautiful. And and and….JUST SO GOOD.
I knew it was dangerous to look at this! But I came away only adding one book to my TBR list (mainly because a few were already on it….)

Heartless is already on my to-read list! Sounds amazing.
Also I have to finish all the Brandon Sanderson books I haven’t read by 11th of March. He is going to be in my city for a workshop/signing (already bought tickets), and I cannot afford to be ignorant about any of his series!

Omg jealous! I’m waiting for Sanderson to come up to NYC at some point. Maybe when Calamity comes out he might do a tour around the vicinity… *fingers crossed*
