Mini Reviews: The Fifth Season, Fire Keeper’s Daughter

I’ve been reading pretty hefty books lately, so I’ve gone through more audiobooks as a way to break away from the big reads. These were good listens, though!

I can’t believe I waited this long to read anything of Jemisin, because The Fifth Season was so good (and I’d heard her later books are even better)! Normally I don’t like listening to fantasy books through audio, but in this case I didn’t mind it because the tone of each section was so distinct and yet tied into the previous and consecutive sections. Will definitely have to pick up the next book after this!

Fire Keeper’s Daughter was an impulse borrow from my audio library, and actually really appropriate to my school reading this summer. If I was going to put this in a checklist of multicultural text to discuss with students, I’d probably greenlight this for early high school, maybe 8th grade if you’re pushing it (though, as I’ve noted, there are trigger warnings for sexual assault and drugs).

Have you read either of these books? What did you think?
